beginner skate advice!
« on: January 14, 2024, 02:39:21 pm »
im just starting out skating and im wondering on what skates to get. ive only been ice skating once but the only lessons near me require you to have skates before your first lesson and theres also no skate shops near me that i can try on skate/get skates fitted. my price range is probably £100-£130 but i wouldnt mind if the skates would last me all 10 uk levels

for some background information, im 5”4, 15 years old and around 45kg

ive been looking into graf 500 in a size 4.5 (im not sure if that would even be right but i measured my foot and it was 233mm) however a few people say these are recreational skates so now im not sure if its worth getting them if ill have to throw them out a couple months later

ive also looked into jackson mystique but i can’t seen to figure out my size and people also say jackson boots that come with the blade attached wear down quickly

i haven’t looked into eda or ridell but i wouldnt mind recommendations from those brands!

I wish I could be of more help.  For £100-£130 what you will get will be better than hire skates - as long as they fit - but if you progress well and continue skating longer term you may need to spend more.  My gut feel is that any boot from a leading maker where the blade can be removed and replaced is probably going to be good enough to last at least a couple of years, unless you progress exceptionally quickly.  I can't give advice about specific boots or brands - but I would advise making the trip to a skate shop, even if it means a long journey.  It's not like buying shoes - if they don't fit (too big or too small) then skating is just awful.  If you do order online, make sure it's not classed as a "special order" which means you can't return them.  Some sites charge a "restocking fee" if you return boots.
