10 ice skating monuments/statues around the world
« on: September 22, 2023, 05:41:08 am »
Some geotagging for interesting artwork related to ice rink sports.
To avoid any copyright/hotlinking issues, there's just links to the images.
To avoid the POI icon obscuring, for the Google Maps links it's slightly to the right.

Obviously there are many more out there, but perhaps not enough.
Any UK artists fancy designing something?

John Curry statue in iceSheffield (indoors though)
Unfortunately this planned Torvill and Dean statue didn't happen.

Slightly off-topic, but I did note this rollerskater statue in London.
Where: The end of Moreton Street (pedestrianized) meets Vauxhall Bridge Road.
Location: 51.490871,-0.134308
Google Maps: Visable; better via Street View.

Great shame about the statue of Torvill and Dean. We really don't do our athletes justice in this country.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

I'm not really a statue person.  Emirates Stadium is littered with statues of Arsenal "greats" - the tourists love them.  But of course Arsenal have tons of money, own the land and make money from stadium tours and while the statues are in a public area I guess it's all part of the experience.  There are some giant photos of old figure skaters at Alexandra Palace, which are quite spectacular and IMO more interesting than statues.

I do find it a bit sad that the thing that seems to have had the most impact on public awareness of figure skating in the UK has been Dancing on Ice, a show which I find loathsome and baffling.

Carolina Kostner seems to be feted and revered in Italy much more than, for example, Robin Cousins.  I don't know why, other than she is charming and Cousins isn't (well, I find him annoying anyway).

I'm pleading the Fifth on that one.

Nice! One idea I thought would be good would be to have a height measure on the wall.
It would be located in the skate change area; when/where people have their shoes off.
On the chart would be marked the heights of great hockey, figure and speed skaters.
Something simple, fun, interactive, educational, relatable for children & adults alike.

Something I remember about the Guildford ice rink; they have motivational quotes on the wall in the changing rooms.
It doesn't have to be something big/expensive, little touches give a place depth/character.

You could have life size, to scale pictures of elite skaters in mid jump showing how high they get off the ground.

Lol, i was just leaving the door open for you to provide a parallel example appropriate to dance.  Degree of knee bend and straightness of free leg would be my candidates - stand in front of the picture and see how you measure up - and make sure you're not looking at your feet!

Following the idea, pretending that the matting is the ice rink, you could have;
(silhouette/comic/street art style)

In an open space:
A speed skater cornering, like this -> https://www.instagram.com/p/CjK5xqjr51R/
A dance couple hydroblading, like Oona and Gage Brown

Next to a railing:
A lady figure skater doing a spiral; so many to pick from.
Jonathan Cassar doing an inside spread eagle.

From a safety aspect probably don't pick moves that are seemingly accessible, but could cause injury.
You just know some idiot will try without warming up, building up the training. (example; no cantilevers)
However, due to the elite level of the twist lift, that would probably be fine, (thinking Aliona Savchenko & Bruno Massot)
since a lot of people would struggle to lift somebody, just off the ground.

To normies, it's just art; but to skaters, and those more playful, they're gonna try and mimic the moves!

We really need you to build an ice rink...
