I'm guessing the rink is built on a nice chunk of prime real estate...?

Sigh.

Seen this happen to too many rinks. There's never any intention, however many assurances are given, that a new rink will be provided. Smoke and mirrors, PR exercises, etc, but never a new rink.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

The main issue is the (more than) doubling of the electric price.
Power generation/distribution is considered CNI (Critical National Infrastructure).
I'd be questioning these roles of responsibility;

https://www.gov.scot/about/who-runs-government/cabinet-and-ministers/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Cabinet_of_Douglas_Ross

Specifically there should be a (multi-revision) policy/strategy document covering electricity for Scotland; probably updated at least every 5/10 years, planning for changes in residential/business usage to provide for the country. If this is absent/inadequate, they're possibly incompetent/negligent; there should be contingency for black swan events too; no societal cascading failures.

Even if you outsource, commercial contracts should be of a robust nature (possibly with a 'Golden Share' included) to guarantee a viable/assured supply; also are the wind turbines all they're made out to be up there?

Obviously this is affecting a lot more than just Ayr ice rink.

For some reason David Icke's 'Problem Reaction Solution' gameplay theory comes to mind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a18Fi9jQQEQ (1:42)

To summarise(could be wrong) regarding the rink;
Current setup is not going to work in the long term (electric too expensive).
South Ayrshire Council have offered to allocate public money to help keep the rink open.
The Curling club, who own/run the rink have not currently progressed with this.
Customers of the rink are understandably concerned with the possible loss.

Not sure if the rink is registered as an ACV, (Assets of Community Value) might be worth looking into if the sale of the rink proceeds.

While receiving funding may sound simple, keep in mind that there maybe 'strings attached';
"Never let a good crisis go to waste" - Winston Churchill
"Of course quid pro quo you're expected, to take certain duties on board" - Scar (Lion King 1994)
"When is a gift not a gift?" - Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Dune 2021)

Hopefully something can be sorted out (feel free to add/correct anything).

Odd that the Curling club seem unenthusiastic.

Richmond, the only rink I skated on as a child...

To be fair, Lambeth council not only replaced Streatham rink AND swimming pool, but also had a very decent temporary rink in Brixton up and running while Streatham was being rebuilt.

Southampton, too. And now Plymouth.

Top man, Icke.  I don't personally believe we've been invaded by lizard people (though sometimes I wonder) but IMO he's right on other things, stands up for what he believes in and questions things which is what we need right now.

This was recently published in a local newspaper/magazine;
(transcribed, so an odd error might be present)

Councillor Martin Dowey - https://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/councillor-martin-dowey

=START=
There have been a lot of mistruths spread about Ayr Ice Rink and the council's involvement in trying to save it.
The board of the Rink contacted me and Cllr Lyons last year asking if there was anything we could do, as a council, to help with the rising energy prices.
We visited the Ice Rink twice and met with the board several times. Sports Scotland, the council and other bodies that might be able to assist with financial support were stopped from doing so as the ice rink is a private limited company with shareholders and, as such, precluded from funding.
The ice rink board refused to accept they had to turn into a charitable trust as they wanted their shareholders reimbursed for the value of their shares. The council cannot give assistance to a private company. The ice rink maintains it is non-profit, it is not. It might not pay dividends, but it is private.
Despite this we continued to engage and had a meeting with all councillors invited to discuss a way forward. The board refused to become a charity but advised they signed another energy deal from September 2023 till September 2024. We agreed to continue to help.
I set up a task force to help the rink become either more sustainable or a charity. I and the council were therefore shocked when the ice rink said they would be closing and that they received 'hollow words from the council.'
I have been working with an investment company to try and save the Rink and have been trying to get an investor to invest in a new rink. The council conducted a survey with the outcome it would cost £5 million to bring it to a suitable standard. We scoped out locations for a new ice rink and found a suitable location.
Until the ice rink's announcement, I had been contacted by no MPs or MSPs regarding this matter, none, apart from my wife, requested an update. Some were very quick to jump on the bandwagon, criticising the council without knowing any facts and could have easily prevented the investor from taking their bid seriously.
We all want the ice rink to be saved and the curlers, ice hockey players, and skaters to have a home, but the issue is more complicated than certain people think.

The explanation is very plausible, and if true, fair enough.  Love to know what "value" the shareholders were going to get from the closing of the business...

Looks like they're gonna get a new rink!

Sounds very exciting, but I'll not be holding my breath. I've seen this too many times and the new rink has failed to materialise...
