Help. Coaches freezing us out
« on: March 16, 2023, 04:49:04 pm »
Hi
We are at the end of our patience. Our daughter had a great coach who left our rink. She was passed on to a coach who is very busy and
had little time to fit her in, they would never return our messages and would run away if we tried to talk to them. after a few weeks we asked them to consider a new coach for our daughter, they took a few weeks to get back to us, then told us to organised it ourselves, we have now tried with another coach who is doing the same to us!!!!!!!! We are beyond frustrated. we have had no coach for 7 weeks now. is this normal behavior for coaches our first coach was so lovely and professional. Any suggestions what we should do?

Did the old coach recommend anyone when they left? They might know who best to ask.

Just defending the coaches 'running away' they might be on a tight schedule, and not have time to stop when teaching at the rink; they should txt/call you back in reasonable time though.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. Yes, we have texted. and they have texted back always late, cancelling late. even when we have booked patch ice and were already there. Then we have actually tried talking to them between sessions and they have ran away both times and not contacted us. It was only when we suggested that we look for someone else they said yes, but even then they were willing to keep us hanging for a further few weeks.
They suggested someone else after we had waited weeks for a reply, they said we should approach a coach they work with. We have, and they have acted in exactly the same way. I have now spoken to our original coach who is deeply upset by their behavior and has told me that they are behaving that way with lots of people lately for some reason.
our original coach is now trying to find someone for us who is reliable. I know its difficult finding a coach but this has been 7 weeks now and we have had no coaching and even left our daughter with half a competition routine finished and allowed them to go on the ice with another coach at the comp. Such unprofessional behavior is shocking and as these people are self employed there is no overarching person or body to complain to. Its quite disheartening for our child as she feels rejected twice now. We are relatively new to skating and are concerned that this is the norm for coaches to behave in such a way? We hope not.

It's not the norm in my experience.  Coaches are a varied bunch from what I have seen, and some are quite particular about who they coach, but I've not had experience of not being able to find any coach in a whole rink who is happy to teach you.

This is not normal or professional. I've never come across it in the UK. Are you in the US?
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.
