Anyone skated at Slough recently?
« on: March 08, 2023, 03:15:29 pm »
Not skated there since the refurbishment/covid.

I've found their website confusing, and tried to telephone multiple times, but no answer.
(we're experiencing a high customer volume <- Lol; a tenner says you're not!)

Does anyone actually work on reception these days?

I wish I could help but I've never skated there and am not in contact with anyone that does.  I guess you could try one of the coaches or the club if they have one - a bit of internet searching might uncover some contact details.  Funny you should mention this - I've just this minute chased two different gyms I am considering giving money to, having asked a very simple question about their offerings several days ago and got no reply.

That's weird; I was just looked at a couple of gyms the other week! Best approach is to turn up and ask to have a look around on the pretext of joining. Check their website first though if they're cool for viewings. Also as I discovered, while the gyms had similar stuff, they had a very different 'feel' to them. One was friendly with people getting on with their thing, the other one not so friendly and a sense of being checked-out/evaluated/judged. If you're not sure, ask if they do a 'day pass' thing which allows unlimited use for one day, rather than commit to a month/rolling contract.

I'll post a report on Slough if I get to skate there anytime soon.

One did get back to me eventually - other one I am still waiting for.  Agree I would not join anywhere without doing at least one visit where we use the facilities.  Hope Slough is a good experience, would be useful for me to know as a skating friend of mine might be moving near there soon.  How's Bracknell shaping up?

Re: Bracknell; it's great that the town still has an ice rink! (the old rink site has now been razed to the ground). From a figure skating perspective there's no getting away from the fact that it's a smaller rink, but there is still plenty that you can do - Hemel skaters can attest to this! Standard compulsory dance patterns, and some competition practices would be difficult. Patch politics-wise it's chill, though there has recently been a change of head coach; so far, so good. Also partly due to the self-service pre-booking malarkey, they need to make sure that they don't become too impersonal as a venue; the friendly aspect of a place is important. Also-also while it doesn't run all the time, Ozone rink has a noisy AC unit which could use some kind of shielding/attenuation.

Meandering, but on the topic of Bracknell; I saw this was posted yesterday:

Onwards and upwards!

Very much meandering but where I skated today there was an adult skater who couldn’t really do a decent edge being made to do teapots by their coach.
Abolish teapots!
Just get a feel for the ice and how to do a deep, solid, stable edge.

I got to skate there recently, and it's a nope from me.

The refurbishment; newer, bigger roof plus additionally a small gym and a climbing wall.
Note that if you approach from the front, the front entrance is on the left side, roughly where the old entrance was.

The ice is really white, like whiteout white. And you cannot see your tracings.
This affects depth perception (there is none) when you look down.
The hockey markings (and advertisements) were blurred indicating light scattering.
At a guess there's something in the water (minerals) or it's lots of micro bubbles?

I didn't feel safe in Slough, and observed a major police incident nearby the rink at the time.
Feel free to check the 'reported' statistics; https://www.police.uk/pu/your-area/ (SL1 2QG <- rink postcode)

While things have been added to the rink, it feels like the place has lost something.

As I mentioned (the cause of starting this thread) customer service is zero.
Nobody picks up the telephone, at the rink facility, or at the head office.
(when I visited the rink the staff were all sitting around chatting by reception)
Their online forms do not result in anything; don't bother it's a waste of your time.
David Bibby, Managing Director "David has been with the company since 1992" <- Seriously? And you still cannot get even the basics right!

Room for improvement.

Just to balance things out.

If you were regularly skating at Slough, you'd probably get used/acclimatized to it.
If you're thinking about competing there, you should definitely try to get some practice runs in.

On the crime front I'm guessing less crime occurs 1st thing in the morning when serious skaters practice.
Except maybe a 5 million pound heist that occurred on Wednesday this week; oops!

When I've skated in UK cities at that hour most people are too tired, and/or drunk to start any trouble.

And to the company running the rink; I'm not saying get ISO 9000 certified; but maybe use it as a guide to improve;
