picking a *second* pair of skates
« on: January 18, 2023, 02:12:33 pm »
I bought some very *entry level* skates three years ago when I was doing LtS classes for a half hour on a Saturday. I'm doing 3-jumps and singles now and I need some new skates.
A bit about my skating:
I'm 5'10 and average weight, I practice 3 times a week, getting sharpened every 1-2 months and I'm competing at a national level with synchro.
My old skates are venus risport (just with black boot covers) and they're not really working for me anymore. I have little support and there's a hole in my skate where the boot contacts the ice for drags. I'm thinking about Jackson Fusion Freestyles but I don't want to overboot. Does anyone have any advice?

The best advice I can give, is go to a reputable fitter and see what they say would work well for you.

Everglides in Gosport or Al's Skate Shop in either Blackpool or Deeside are 2 that come highly recommended (I've used Al's - Alison finally got me into correctly fitting boots and I've not looked back or had any issues, almost a year in. Usually I'm having some problem by this point with fit or support).

You need a proper fitting to make sure you're in the right brand and size. If Risport fit your feet best, then you should be looking at the RF3 Pro. If Jacksons are the right brand, then I wouldn't advise anything lower rated than a Debut Fusion as Freestyles are too low a rating for your height and skating.

Blade wise, I always recommend Coronation Ace - it's massively popular because it's excellent and very rarely the wrong answer - but if synchro is really your first skating love, then maybe look at either Coronation Dance or MK Dynasty, both of which have pretty standard freestyle toe picks but shorter heels for closer, more precise footwear - and less chance of another synchro skater stepping on the back of your blade.

Make an appointment with either Al at Al's Skate Shop (Blackpool or possibly Deeside) or with Everglides in Gosport. You'll save time, pain and money by getting fitted properly.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.
