Ice Dance at Bristol
« on: January 14, 2023, 06:52:52 pm »
A new ice dance class has been started at the Planet Ice rink at Bristol Patchway. It's on Friday mornings, for one hour from 10.45am and is lead by Hugh, the resident dance coach. Called, "Coffee, Dance and Cake" - yes, you get all three - it's bookable online on the Planet Ice website and costs £15 or £13.50 if you have a PI Ice Card.

The class itself is aimed at Skate Excellence Level 3 and above and nobody gets left behind as the technique exercises have different levels for all skaters.

If you fancy trying some dance or are an experienced ice dancer, and can get there, it's proving popular and is very enjoyable. Four people are travelling all the way from Cornwall for it on a weekly basis!
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

Nice to hear the rink is up and running and providing skating for people in that part of the world.  Better late than never!  I guess we've done not too badly - not many places closed permanently due to covid and some new ones open in the last few years - Leeds, Bracknell (replacement).

Lee Valley is still not open - website says "soon" and "this winter" but no date.  Think they must be close.  Better will run it so one hour slots only - absurd given they will have two pads.

Sobell still closed due to flood damage as far as I know.

Oooh, if they're doing this at PI Bristol, I wonder if there's hope for other PI rinks...?

I mean, it'd be INTERESTING at Uttoxeter, but it'd be fun. I like dance, the fact that my skater for my Inclusive Skating coaching course is letting me introduce her to free dance says it all :D

I don't think it's a Planet Ice thing as much as the dance coach pushing for it. Friday mornings are pretty quiet at Bristol so they gave in and let him have an hour as a trial. It's attracting more people than normal so hopefully it will continue.

Thank-you for posting this.

It mentions 'Skate Excellence' - does the coach use this proprietary colour coding system, or it is taught regular like?
The greatest trick figure skaters ever pulled, was convincing the world it was easy.

The coach wears the obligatory blue and red gloves but so far there has been no Skate Excellence speak and I suspect he just wears the gloves out of habit/political expediency. I believe there is a Dance Excellence course in the pipeline but this class has nothing to do with it.
