Help with axel jump
« on: January 10, 2023, 08:52:45 pm »
I've wanted to an attempt an axel but I haven't been able to learn a backscratch spin. Will learning a backscratch spin help me with attempting an axel?

I have never seen anyone who has an axel that can't do a backspin.  The backspin position is what you're in with the standard (closed) axel (or any other multi rotation jump).  You can do an open axel but you need a lot more height and air time, a lot more power and control.  So I would carry on with trying to get the backspin.  But I expect your coach will tell you all this.

Yes, you need a backspin. Preparation for axel involves landing a three jump and going into a backspin.

Please work with your coach on this rather than trying to learn axel on your own. And get the backspin first!
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

I've been trying to get a backspin (with a coach and without) for 17 years.  Still can't do it.  I have never been able to get over the feeling that I'm going to break my ankles, so I just pull the free foot out and put it down.  All in my head.  I've given up now - too old.  Focusing on basics like posture and edges instead.
