Video of figure skating
« on: December 21, 2022, 02:31:38 pm »
Hello,
I make videos of my daughter an other kids when figure skating.
Right now I'm taking the video's with my smartphone (a samsung s22 ultra) and I want to go one step further.
I'd like to use an external microphone but I do not know if I need to use a uni-directional or an omni-directional mic?
And preferred mics for this purpose?

Hello,

Just a friendly piece of advice: be VERY careful doing this, particularly of other people's children. A lot of rinks don't allow it and if you start adding in external microphones etc you're opening yourself up to problems and accusations, even if your intentions are good.

What exactly do you do with the videos? Most of my younger friends are only allowed to be videoed by their parent, in lessons, for specific purposes.

I say this as someone who has worked in schools, done safeguarding courses and is working towards coaching qualfications.

Thank you for letting me know to be careful with this.
But the all the kids are involved in competition skating and videos are not posted on facebook.
They are all sent to the parents of those kids, not published somewhere else and all of the parent are aware of what I'm doing and they are OK with it.
I knew beforehand to be careful with this.

Ah that's good that you're aware and have the parents permission. Unfortunately, not everyone has good intentions and your post just rang the alarm bells a little, because of the things I've done previously.

To actually attempt to answer your original question, I'm not familiar with the comparability or specific options, but a lot will depend on what sound you want to capture. A unidirectional microphone will cut out a lot of background noise etc, so if you're wanting to record feedback or one person speaking, that may be better than an omnidirectional setup.
