Sliding sideways one foot spin
« on: November 11, 2022, 07:34:53 pm »
Hi everyone,  I’ve been getting lots of inspiration reading posts in the forum so I finally decided to join officially  :)

I’m an adult skater (over 50) and been skating about 3 years.  I had an OK’ish one foot spin but got new skates last week with a slightly more curvy rocker.  I’ve managed to find the sweet spot again but once I start spinning the blade slips sideways from under me. I’ve never experienced that before. It’s really scary and I’ve lost some confidence in my spins.

Has anyone else experienced the same and have any idea why this might be happening?

Have these new skates been sharpened ?
Some new skates come with a “factory sharpening” and some are not sharpened at all.
“Factory sharpening” means: a kind of superficial sharpening of a pre-set hollow.
This is also meant to make sure you won’t cut your fingers on the blade and sue the manufacturer.
The blades need a real sharpening before use.

Hi - Yes, they were sharpened by the Pro shop for me.  They are MK Galaxy blades and I’ve changed from the Mark IV which were on my old Jackson Artiste. I the new blade has a slightly deeper curved between the top picks and the sweet spot so I’m wondering if that can cause problems adjusting. :-\

Assuming the Pro Shop did a good job, it’s hard to tell what’s wrong without seeing the blades.

The blades seem pretty sharp.  Maybe it’s just technique and having to get used to a new balancing point.  Ext lesson is tomorrow so I’ll see what my trainer thinks :-\

I agree with the other comments.  IMO spins are especially sensitive to minor changes in blade configuration so most likely you just need to get used to it.

I had a word with my trainer yesterday and she also thought I just needed to practice and get used to the new blades.  Hopefully it won’t take me as long to “re- learn”  :-\

Practice 2-foot spins for a while to help you find your new balance. It'll come.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

It’s getting better after a few more practices.  I went back to two foot spins like you suggested and that’s helped build up my confidence.  I’ve found I need to tip more forward on them than before. I’m not quite back to where I was but it’s getting closer  ;)
