What should I try learning now?
« on: August 09, 2022, 08:05:40 pm »
I'm BIS level 4 and I've recently learned how to do backwards and forwards crossovers and a waltz jump, currently working on my inside three foot turn. I want to try learn something new as I do not have a coach at the moment. What are your suggestions?

Honestly? You need coaching in some form, either group lessons or private. Skating is a dangerous sport and it's also easy to develop very bad habits rather than good technique. Once you develop a bad habit, it takes a lot of time, practice and - usually - money to get rid of it.

Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

If you’ve already got both left and right crossovers, try crossrolls

Totally agree - bad habits are easy to develop and almost impossible to get rid of and I have seen zero decent figure skaters who were self taught.  It's just too hard.  I have seen some hockey and roller skaters who are very very strong and skilled skaters but they are very rare and have exceptional natural talent.  99+% of people are simply not capable of developing properly without help.

As for what to do next - just make your basics better.  Forward and backward stroking, forward and backward edges.  Edges should be clean and strong and you should be able to hold them at will.  Stroking should involve proper reset, rebend, strong leg extension, strong push.
