A Big Thank You.
« on: October 03, 2014, 01:38:29 pm »
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you on this forum who signed the petition last year to keep the Hemel Ice rink open.  It was due to close last November and as a result of a campaign to keep it open we got a stay of execution. Last night it was confirmed that we had won our battle and the rink will stay. It closes next weekend for a refurb to start but should be open again, all sparkly and new, by mid February.  Every signature on the petition helped so many, many thanks.

That's fantastic!!!  I don't live in the UK, so may or may not have signed the petition (I don't recall).

There is a similar fight going on at a rink in Portland Oregon.  The rink is in a shopping mall, and rather than closing it, they're making it too small to be useable (for anything other than public/group lessons).  23inmyhead, if you, or anyone else on here for that matter,  have time and energy, your experience and insights would, I imagine, be very welcome.  I'm not involved in that situation, so I can't say for sure....just putting it on your radar.

Here's their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SaveOurSkaters

I know that group would love some support.  They've a pretty uphill battle- mall owners are out of state, and had the plans drawn up and finalised (so big $$ spent) before they made public their plans.

Congratulations on your success!

That is wonderful news! I am so glad I will be able to carry on skating. I don't know what I'd of done if it had closed.

I didn't know your rink was under threat but I'm pleased it was saved anyway. We need our ice!
