OK, so I watched more videos about the compulsary figures, and found out that there is NO pattern already on the ice for the skater to follow!  Wow!  I can't even imagine having to skate that from scratch and make it perfect...that's really amazing.

But I still don't know the answer to my other question...what about the next skater?  Does everyone just move to a clean patch of ice each time there's a new skater?  One of the videos said they were on the ice for 7 hours on the day of compulsary figures competition.  I can see why it was eliminated!

Noorah101 ,

Believe it or not the next skater makes their own tracing and a kind of stick thingy is used to measure the size of the tracing compared to the skaters height!! Something like that ,but the sheer perseverance for perfection is quite incredible when you watch it online. 7 hours is a long slog ,but would be fab to have them back as a skating formality .I hope when a next compulsory figures camp comes  around it will be heavily promoted and marketed because it really deserves a shot especially with the amount of adult skaters on ice these days . I believe they will love them !!  O0

Oh yes, I saw them doing that, too.  I guess my question is more basic...do they just move to a clean patch of ice after each skater, or do they wipe that same patch of ice clean each time?  I know, kind of a dumb question, but my curiousity is piqued now! LOL

As a skater, I would love to see more of this, too.  It's pretty amazing stuff!  I think I'd give  more credit to the skills of someone who can do all those perfect tracings, rather than someone who can do a quadruple jump.  But I can understand why it was cut as part of competitions...it just takes too long and is not meant for spectators.

Instead of a camp solely for figures it might be an idea to include a “taster” session on figures in one of the other skating camps if there is a coach who can do them, to spark an interest in them.

Don't have an answer but each figure had to be done on clean ice with up to 9 judges watching, so the ice had to be resurfaced some time after they had used all the spaces!  If your coach learned figures perhaps she would know the answer.  I will ask a coach who is likely to know but we have half-term next week then the rink is closed for the next two for a new ice pad so not likely to see him until after that.
