Having problems with turns
« on: April 08, 2012, 03:10:48 pm »
Hoping someone can give me advice. I have a really silly problem! I can skate backwards on both feet and on one foot with relatively no problem. Then when I go to step from backwards to forwards I can't lift my foot to do the turn (if that makes sense!). I feel as if I can't balance properly???? Any ideas?

I had an opposite problem with you.
Can't do any Mohawk but now I can.
I still believe it'll come with a lot of practice, I waste like 3months to capable of doing Mohawk.
Or from my point of view, you think too much or take it too seriously (like I did!)
Don't think about it too much,  let it go naturally.
Hope you can find the way soon! ;)

Could you try to describe the exact problem in a little more detail? Is it that you don't feel like you can turn the foot you're going to go forward on to face the right way? I read it like you can't lift your foot off the ice but you already said you can skate backwards on one foot so I'm not sure.

I know it sounds weird!  ??? Suppose I tense up and get worried about the turn. What happens is I skate backwards start to bring either my left or right arm back depending on what way I'm turning then just can't get enough confidence to lift my foot and step forward. I can do it after a fashion but it's done in a rush which  puts me off balance and doesn't help the confidence much!

I guess the simple answer is try not to rush it (easier said than done, I know!).

Try lifting the foot and gliding backwards for a few seconds (without attempting to turn your body) before you start to turn your body. It makes sure you have the balance on one foot first. Then pick something to your left or right (depending on which way you're turning) to look at and focus on, then turn your upper body to look at it, then put the foot down.
This is what worked for me anyway. I was finding it quite difficult, then one of the coaches kind of explained it this way. There's a cafe at one end of our rink and a clock at the other, and when we were skating across-ways, the coaches would say "lift the foot, now look at the cafe/clock, and...turn". Worked for me anyway. Hope it helps a bit!

This video explains about turning from backward to forward (after the advert!!).  It might help to see it being done.  Oh to have a rink as empty as this to practise skating backwards!  Rob has done a few other videos as well. I wish, when I started skating that there had been all the different videos that are on the internet now.

I had a problem with this move last week having to do it in Kilian hold with my coach!  (part of a new dance) It's no problem on my own or in waltz hold but I felt so restricted being side by side going backwards.
