I know what you mean about not being as supple!! I keep getting told 'Turn out the hip!' and I'm going 'I'm trying, honest!' Does anyone else find themselves practising positions in the kitchen or at work? I do! Sometimes people see me and go 'What on earth are you doing?' They all think I'm mad;)

Not sure at 36 that I'm quite ready for the 'oldie' label but as I keep straining my hamstring (much to my daughters amusement) whilst attempting the forward spiral I certainly know what you mean about not being so supple!

You not old or mad, i started in sept last year at 38 and now got skate uk 4, working towards 5. I attend an adult group lesson once a week and dont have time for additional practice, but now summer timetable is out i hope i can get more skating in.  I skate in Kilmarnock and occasionally go to Auchinharvie public sessions, Keep at it, its not easy but great fun, my friends think im crazy and like you i wish i had started when i was younger and slimmer and fitter, but we cant have it all.  Keep us posted on how your doing  ;)

Haha, I know what you mean about the hips. I go to a sports therapist every week who stretches me out which keeps me just about flexible enough to skate but I struggle with turning my hips out. There is no way I will ever achieve the spread eagle move!

I practice all my turns and jumps in the kitchen, I'm not sure it helps but it gives the dog hours of amusement as he tries to play bite me while I'm doing them.  :)

I do stretch every day now. To help your hips open try leg swings sideways and forwards and backwards. Spread eagles without skates will also help. Every bit helps.I never thought i would be able to skater again due to a serious illness so is relearning and loving it.Yes,hooked is the word!!

Hi,

Not sure about being an 'oldie', older maybe! Started skating instead of buying a sports car or a big motorbike like some people do when they reach a certain age. Its easily the hardest thing I have ever tried to do, but I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it now. I do wish I had skated as a child. I've not let people at work see me using my spinner yet!

I have trouble turning my right ankle to do a snow plough stop and skating backwards, I fell on my elbow and it's about 4 times bigger than it should be so I'm having a couple of weeks off, old bones break easy ah ah

I've just re-learnt how to do the outside 3 turn after completely losing the ability to do one at all when I had to do it from a running edge instead of just popping it round from a virtual standstill. I have spent the last 3 months trying to do them, spending literally hours of practice time and lesson time on them. Finally last weekend I got it! The thing that did it for me was consciously putting my weight over the arch of my foot and bending my knee. I had been keeping my weight too near the front of the blade. Anyway, by putting my weight further back, standing up straight, especially after the turn, keeping the knee of my non skating leg turned out and having the confidence to just go for it at last it worked. It wasn't a fluke either as I could still do them for my coach the next day!  So keep at it, you will get them!

I don't know if it will help but my daughter struggled with the 3 turns and I found with her going back to the one foot outside glide and strengthening and building her confidence to master that part of it really helped. :)
