On my 2nd time skating i fell and smashed my knee. Had some time off to heal and returned wearing knee pads! Now i don't fall often and if i do it's a fairly controlled fall so i just get 'tubigrip' bandages and double them up over my knees, and do the same on my elbows and i also wear wrist splints - i'm a violinist studying at music college so really cannot afford any injuries above the waist! When i start doing jumps etc. the proper knee pads will return, as will elbow pads and padded pants...

Safety first ;) haha!

I now have a pair of padded shorts designed for skating which are more discreet than the snow boarder crash shorts I bought first. My shorts were from a skating supplier on the internet.  http://www.love2iceskate.com/productdetail.aspx?pid=235
They were £40. I think the padding leaves gaps right in the areas where I've landed in falls before so I also got some silicon pads. These are advertised as hip enhancement pads from a seller called TomTop on eBay. They cost £5.35 a pair and come from China so they take about 3 weeks to arrive. I tuck them inside the shorts. I haven't actually fallen since getting any of this kit but a girl at my rink uses these exact gel pads and she says they definitely take the worst of the impact out of the fall. Apparently they will stay put just tucked inside a pair of tights, they seem to stick to skin quite well. They don't show when you are wearing them so you don't look like you've got huge hips!

I also wear knee pads too, I got some described as snow board knee pad gaskets from Anarchy on eBay, £18 including postage. They are more discreet than most knee pads I've seen and I don't notice I'm wearing them after the first 2 or 3 minutes.

The only bit of me that isn't protected now is the most important bit, my head. Since its been so cold I've been skating in a fleecy hat which makes me feel a bit safer as I think it would cushion my head a bit if I were to bash it on the ice.

Trayo TBH I am surprised more people dont wear head protection, I wear a helmet when I play Hockey but I hit my head hard last week in a rec session. Hitting the ice with your head is the same as hitting it on concrete I guess???

I always wear elbow and knee pads under my clothes pretty much all the time now, because they are soft ones they dont take all the impact out but maybe 80% or so. If I want to learn something that I just keep falling over doing I stick my Hockey pads on for half hour then rip them off.

I don't think that the head guard will do much. I read some opinions of specialists that while headguard will prevent you to crack you skull, it will not prevent you from having concussion. They explained (hope I won't muddle this up) that the concussion is caused by the acceleration and then abrupt stopping, which causes I think the brain to be hitting into the skull. To get concussion you don't even have to hit the head on the ice, so the head guard will not prevent that.

I'd much rather not have a cracked skull and have concussion! :P I don't wear a helmet though, but it's a very good idea

I'm sure someone a while back was using silicone "chicken fillets" as knee pads so hip enhancement pads... why not?  ;D
