Hi Paul2

why don't you email Mark and find out whether you would benefit from the course?

Hi SkateMum,

I have e-mailed Mark and he has seen me having lessons, but I would still like a second opinion from a skaters point of view.

Paul,

Why don't you go to one of the Dundee Learn to Skate camps?  You do get  learn to skate lessons but
also games, races and just different stuff on ice.

The emphasis is on enjoying yourself and having fun. While you're concentrating on  skating after a ball or trying to play hockey you're doing something other than the constant drive to pass all the badges.

Out of interest Paul, has he come back to you.  I would be interested to know what he said.

I was thinking of doing this course but on reading some of the posts thought I probably wouldn't be good enough.

Paul, Why don't ya just go to one to satisfy your curiosity. I presume most people know their capabilities, if not a reality check is in order.

But one question. What do you want to get out of these camps? Is this something your coach cannot offer you at your level? if not, time for a change.

Do you ask yourself why you're not progressing??? is it a physical issue, fear? equipment issue? technique issue etc etc.

What do you want to get out of skating??? just badges or happiness or something else??

Paul may be different to me but i like to go to camps and schools to socialise with other adults who share an interest while practising some of the skills i'm a bit stuck with. i think if you go thinking something's going to improve dramatically or you'll suddenly be able to do something you couldn't previously you'll be disappointed. for me its mainly about the social side, but also picking up different ways of doing things, practising what you know and getting a chance to try something new. you never know a fresh opinion may just help you get it, but for me first and foremost its a holiday With a little bit of torture thrown in for good measure :-) x

Hi,

Just trying to get a second opinion that's all!

I have been to Dundee skate camps, which are great fun. Its good to share experiences with other skaters, although because my skating has got 'stuck', I have limited experiences to share!

I have also been to a Sheffield camp a couple of years ago where I nearly left the ice out of sheer frustration, as I felt I had been abandoned by the coaches at that point.

What do I want to get out of skating? I'd like to have fun (which I do most of the time), I'd also like to complete Skate UK in a sensible amount of time like most other skaters manage to do, but that ain't going to happen cos I have already been on it 4 years!!!

Ho hum,

Paul

Hi Paul

I commend your enthusiasm but really think you would be wasting your money at Mark's camps.  They are not about learning new skills or any of the Skate UK skills and they are not designed to give individual tuition on such things which would appear to be more in line with what you require.  They are about making significant improvements to line and extension and posture and kneebend in skating which requires a degree of competence in the skills in the first place.  I do think you would find it frustrating and therefore not a lot of fun.

I am curious as to what is holding you back in skating as you obviously put in a lot of effort but don't seem to be reaping much reward.  In my experience it is usually our brains rather than our bodies holding us back as adults, especially as so much of skating is a mental game with confidence playing a huge part in success.  Have you considered looking at some of the mental tricks sports people use to improve their game and confidence like mental rehearsal of a skill where you picture yourself doing it correctly and successfully again and again every day? I so hope you can reach your goal of completing skate UK soon.

There is an Etap right next door to rink which is cheap and basic. There is also a Premier Inn across the road which is more comfortable :).
