falling safely
« on: August 08, 2007, 08:20:08 pm »
Hi, i recently had a fall whilst ice skating and broke my thumb. Does any one know of ways to fall more safely to minimise the risk of injury?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I came across this link on another website, I hope it is ok to post it here ...

http://www.geocities.com/grunes/falling.html

This is a rather comprehensive document, but essentially it explains how you learn to fall gently. If you watch senior skaters (meaning skill level not age) then you will notice that they tumble often when practicing difficult techniques, but seem to mostly slip onto the ice rather than fall over with a crunch. In essence, I think it is a case of not fighting the fall, but relaxing and sinking into it.

Sorry to hear about your thumb, by the way, I have acquired several injuries so do understand. Hope it is not stopping your skating too much.

Coventry - yes. It is the only rink I have skated at to be honest, other than a short session at Oxford (ugh) and a fun thing at Warwick Castle. I think the rink is good though, and there are junior internationals who practise there, so I guess it is ok.

I am away for a fortnight (holiday in Crete woohoo) and leave in about 30 minutes, so this will be last post for a little while  :)
