Skating Backwards
« on: June 16, 2007, 04:03:53 pm »
Hi, my name is Abbi.

I have just started learning to ice skate, and have finished Skate UK level 2 after 3 weeks of lessons. Today we were practicing backwards skating again and my teacher said that my legs were too far apart, so i have tried to bring them closer together. However, this makes my knees touch, is it ok for my knees to be touching? I dont want to practice it wrong and then have to unlearn bad habits!!!

Thanks

x Abbi x

Hi abbi :)

Soz it isn't good for ur knees to be touching cos wen you learn to go faster and jumps etc.. ur knees could trip you up!!

Do you bend your knees enough?
Do you lean forward too much? Because that can make ur knees touch...

Practise standing up straight with ur knees bent on the ice (standing still) cos that could help u with ur backward skatin and other moves later on..

reply...

Thanks 4 ur fast reply!

When im standing still i can bend my knees without them touching, its just when i try to point my toes in for the backwards skating  :-\

My teacher seemed to want my toes to be in a tight V shape........

The V shape shouldn't be too tight cos otherwise wen u come to do other things u'll trip over like i sed earlier...

They should be pointed in slightly but not too much.

Have you heard of skulling/lemons? They could help..

reply :)

PS- btw if u bend ur knees too much wen u skate backwards u end up leaning forwards and not being able to move ur feet lol
