Hiya, thank you for replying. it’s the pushing off. I don’t think I’m describing my problem in ice skating terms.
I feel like I’m on my toes all the time. And I think I also pull back on my toes so that I completely stop. I’ve always been very light on my feet. My heels never get worn out. How do I distribute the pressure in the whole boot? Not sure if this is making sense. 🙈

Sort of making sense.  If you get your skates parallel, not too wide apart, and someone gives you a little push, do you glide?  If not, what happens?  Perhaps you could get someone to gently support you while doing this and you can experiment with feeling your weight over your skates and whether perhaps the toe pick is slightly scratching which would slow you down.  Knees over toes, pelvis a bit forward so your butt isn't sticking out, you should feel some pressure from the tongue of the boot on your lower shin at the front, and I would say try not to scrunch your toes up but really feel your weight going down into the ice.

I seem to be more on my front than on the whole blade.

You sound like a skier, or speed skater? Gently place your boot on a flat surface and observe the curve of the blade from the side. Ideally your weight needs to sit further back for basic skating; the non-curved heel (unlike hockeys) will ensure that you don't fall backwards. You will use different parts of you blade for different things. It's a weird thing, not pushing from your toes, and you might feel muscle pain in your shins lifting your toes up to start with.
The greatest trick figure skaters ever pulled, was convincing the world it was easy.

Thank you so much. Yes I think I’m getting the idea. I have to push down on my foot. I’m going to give it a try tomorrow. I do skate around the rink close to the wall just in case I trip over my toe pick. I’m too scared of falling at my age. Osteoporosis and all. I’ll probably break my bones and no one will be able to put me back again. Humpty  Dumpty all over. 😅. But I’m determined to do it and giving myself the next 3 weeks. Do or do again next season. 😀😀

Thank you Black.
Nope never skied or skated in my life. Yes I need to practice walking at home and push down on my heels. I’ll do my best this season and pick up when it starts again in October. 😅

If there are times when you don't have easy access to ice you could try skating on wheels if you have access to a roller rink, or skating session in a sports hall, or a smooth, flat outdoor surface in a park or car park.  There are some differences depending on what skates you get, but the basics of being over your skates and weight transfer are the same - and it's huge fun.

Hi, I'm Karen and I'm returning to skating after a few years away from the ice. If Derek is a crustie think that makes me a crumbly as I'm over  60.  I achieved level eight of classic Skate UK learn to skate and wonder now if I'll ever attain those dizzy heights again. :-\

Perhaps not a direct comparison as this chap has been skating for a fair while, though I think mainly on wheels, but I was chatting to someone at the rink the other day who is 78 and he has lovely edges and flow and you would think he's at least 10 years younger.  Stick at it and if you don't already the supplement your time on the ice with physical conditioning of whatever kind you find fun and sustainable.

Hey, im a beginner too so idk for sure but do you think your boots are fitted correctly to your foot? do you think the skate is long enough for your feet to move forward so your heel isnt making contact with the boot? if so that might be why. I find myself tripping over my toepick from weight distribution too i think what helps me is putting the back of the blade on the ice first when i stroke. if your light on your feet you might find tighter lacing helpful, im very heavy on my feet so i tie mine a little looser and wear edeas for their looser fit. Take this advice with a grain of salt and i hope everything goes well!!!!

G'day Frank! Welcome! Most of the cameraderie goes on in the "What did you/didn't you achieve this week?" threads. Enjoy!  8)
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.
