Is this a result of the switch to GMT, or has it occurred recently? I noticed the same last year ...

Hi there everyone. I'm SkatingBabe well my real name is Kathy. I joined this forum not long ago. And I find it is a great source to get info from.

I am currently thinking of joining an ice skating club to have a bit of fun I still haven't joined even after a YEAR of thinking lol

How bad is that?

Any tips on joining a club would be appreciated?  :)

Well joining my figure skating club has definitely advanced my skating, apart from the stuff covered during the club sessions, which is primarily based around fun, I am recognised by all the rink and coaching staff as a serious skater, and I am now helping on a volunteer basis with the Learn to Skate classes, which also sharpens one's skills.

I think most clubs require a minimum skating standard, ours specifies LTS level 8, although they will accept skaters at level 5, which is also the minimum standard for the hockey club.

Best thing to do is pop in and have a chat when there is a session on or perhaps towards the end of the session.

The club I am thinking of joining is on a Saturday afternoon for one hour.
I just want to join and have fun I dont want to become a World Champion!!!! :) I would like to be able to skate around a rink without having to be near the edge which is what I do at the minute!!!!! :-[

The club do group lessons. Not sure if that is SkateUK or not though.
What is the best type of clothing to wear for ice skating? Jeans OK??

I personally dislike skating in jeans, as they can restrict your movement and if you fall over, they tend to stay wet for a very long time!

I prefer wearing jogging pants to skate in - they let me move freely, keep me warm, and dry out quickly if they get wet.

Whatever you wear, make sure they are not too flare-y around your ankles, otherwise you risk catching your blade in them.

Most figure skaters wear leggings with leg warmers over their skates and half way up their lower leg with a fleece on top to keep warm. Or skirts/dresses but I would prefer to wear those for competitions. I would also wear gloves too so if you do fall over your hands are protected.

I am not sure if this is a rule for every rink, but at my rink, scarves are not permitted.

If you watch dancing on ice, look closely at the training and see what the professional wears.
