It is really important to have a coach whose methods chime with your needs. Some people like to know the physics, the whys and wherefores, in order to understand what they are doing, others find it baffling and just prefer to be corrected over and over again. And then there are the ones who need a physical shove...  ::)

Teaching is finding 50 ways to explain the same thing. And, sadly, not every teacher realises that. Or actually has an aptitude for teaching!
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

I would agree with all of the above.  In addition to ticking all of those "needs" boxes I also prefer to work on one or two things at a time.  I would add that a lot of coaches seem to want to go through a boilerplate standard lesson, out of laziness or perhaps that is what they think people want.  I've not seen a great deal of coaching recently in either tennis or skating that has inspired me to want to restart lessons.

I got back on the ice after a break of about a month for various reasons, didn't fall, didn't feel alien after the first 30 seconds, managed to be reasonably mindful most of the time.  I've been trying to go round in a circle propelling myself in a bent-leg spreadeagle position, my weak side is almost as good as my strong side now, next step is to make the circle wider and wider until I can do an oval or go in a straight line.

Got better at something similar to this but with the free foot turned the other way and not round cones

Just trying to picture it with the free foot turned the other way. Very cool!

Once again, I've done absolutely no skating.

Thanks. Right now, I'm not even sure if I want to. Time will tell.

Welll I guess everything has its time but perhaps something that has brought you as much joy as skating has will find a place in your life again

I hope so. I'm going for my lesson on Tuesday to see how I do/feel. It's a combination of factors, the long drive there and back being a major one, but also my skating standard deteriorating with my balance issues. I need to get to the bottom of why that's happening.

I achieved visiting a rink new to me - Slough.  I never went to the old Slough.  The new one is as you'd expect - a corrugated steel thing - functional.  Ice was decent, entry price not too bad (£11 something but you get 2.5 hours for that).  Quiet daytime morning public session, usual collection of entitled feeling figure skaters and their even more entitled feeling coaches, and some nice, unassuming people too.   It felt quite unsafe - lessons with high level skaters, dancers and people doing double jumps going on, running programs to music, alongside some random public skaters and people on wheelchairs.  A portion of the rink was coned off for beginner 1-1 lessons but was hardly used - a waste.  I won't be rushing back - but I don't like ice rinks.  Probably OK for those that do.
