Sorry that Slough felt unsafe. I used to train there back in the late 80s and absolutely loved it, as it specialised in ice dance and was my home from home. Public sessions aren't really the right place for higher level skaters to have lessons.

I went to Bristol for my dance lesson on Tuesday. The first time I've driven myself there and back in one day. Absolutely exhausted the next day. Plus my lower back was really sore whilst skating and afterwards. My dance coach advises continuing to skate, as it keeps the muscles working the right way and it will be harder to "get back" if I stop for a while. But it's really not much fun, so I have some big decisions to make.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

"Public sessions aren't really the right place for higher level skaters to have lessons."  I would agree but the reality is the session was very quiet and I think rinks are desperate to survive any way they can - however those higher level skaters probably have season tickets so there's no incremental revenue from them.  Oberstdorf has very strict rules about not jumping and spinning in public sessions - rules that are largely ignored by lower level skaters, so I imagine they exist to stop higher level skaters from doing it (though to be fair, they have patch all day every as they have 3 pads and very little hockey.  All skating is unsafe to a degree, just bugs me that elite level skater who already dominate patch sessions (of which there are a lot) seem to think it's OK to train on a public session, and the coaches are happy to go along with it.

I guess you've tried physiotherapy and off ice training.  My lower back still gets sore but since I started lifting heavy weights (well, they feel heavy to me!) in moves like the deadlift, I have had fewer serious issues.  I'm coming up to 59.  Swimming has been helpful to me, too - supported in the water, cardio, muscular endurance and joint mobility.

I managed a couple of backwards laps looking over my outside shoulder - session was quiet enough (10ish people) that it was doable but still a bit nerve-racking - feels very odd, my perception of distance seems different.  Will go back to this session as it's local and try to stick with working on this until I am comfortable (probably need a year or two for that to happen :))

Still skating, still enjoying it.  I'll settle for that!  Still trying to feel where bits of my body are, where my weight is - moving forward a millimetre at a time mostly, with the occasional full step forward.

Managed a double session before the school holidays start. Made some progress propelling myself with both feet in the spread eagle position, but only in one direction. In the other direction my left side disregards commands from the brain. I will have to work out what the difference is.

What have I "achieved" recently?  Lots of skating, mainly wheels.  Still working on the same stuff, seems to be improving slowly.  Ice today for the first time in a month - I had been avoiding the rink as it is school holidays.  I achieved my main goal which was to remind myself how ice felt so I'd be less rusty come the autumn, but it was the worst of both worlds - unruly kids and figure skaters practising and having lessons.  I'd still like to find a really picky coach who is prepared to film me, but I may have to change rinks to do so which I'm not too keen on right now.

Managed a fair few laps backwards clockwise - rink was a bit quieter so it was less unsettling.  Need to do a lot more.  My local roller rink changes direction every half hour or so.

Been doing onsite project work recently, so only getting some weekend skates in at the moment.
The greatest trick figure skaters ever pulled, was convincing the world it was easy.

Yesterday I did a long skate outdoors focusing mainly on backwards clockwise.  Need to do a lot more of it before it's as smooth as anticlockwise.

I haven't skated since May. A combination of pain, balance problems and a person with major issues became too much.

Sorry to hear that; hope that things work out so you can start again at some point.  Is dance an option to tide you over - perhaps more leeway to be kind to your body than in skating?
