Which blades?
« on: October 20, 2020, 07:54:59 pm »
Hi all,
I’m new to here so hope I’m posting right!
A bit of background ... I used to skate as a kid but finished at age 16. However, I’ve come back as an adult nearly 20 years later and getting my single jumps back and have my level 1 BIS in. I am still in my skates from when I was a kid, risport super cristellos, with coronation ace blades.
I went to get my skates sharpened a few days ago and asked them to check my boots. They said they were actually too big (I had a feeling they were) so I’ve had some new boots - risport Electra light. As I’ve gone down from size 250 to 240 I couldn’t transfer my old coronation ace blades. At the time, I didn’t get any new blades and thought I’d be ok with the blades on the new boot - edea rotation. Now I haven’t tried the new boots yet, but I’m really nervous about the blade and don’t know whether just to go back and get some new coronation aces. Am I right in thinking the rocker differs on the two blades (edea rotation - 8, ace 7??). Will I notice a difference? Because I’ve had my old boots and blades for over 20 years, I’m worried about such a drastic change I think!
Thanks all

If your blades are 20 years old, and had a fair bit of sharpening back in the day, they may be flat anyway (sharpening over time tends to diminish the spin rocker....how much depends on the skill of your sharpener), so ANY new blade, even a new CorAce is going to feel curvy.  I wouldn't worry about the 7' vs 8'.  I've tried both, and didn't notice a huge difference.  It's the spin rocker that, at least for me, has the greatest effect on the way a blade feels.

I would say give the blade a shot.  If you don't like it you can always swap it out later.  You may think it's fantastic!

Oh, holy cow, just go and get some new Coronation Aces!  Edea Rotation are horrid.  Really horrid.  I tried them out back in March (a friend's boots and blades, while she tried skating in my dance boots and Phantoms) and frankly I have no idea how anyone skates on them.  The quality of the metal isn't good and to my mind they barely glide.  Ghastly things.   The only reasons that people don't complain about them more is that (a) they generally know no better and (b) they don't hurt!  Coronation Ace is always the right answer.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

Totally agree, Get the Coronation Ace.
My daughter had Rotations on a pair of Edea Overtures. When she switched up to Coronation Ace everything improved almost instantly (Speed, spins, edges, jumps). When she wore those flat from sharpening she switched up again to Gold Seal.
As the person that paid for the sharpening it is also noticeable how much less the Coronation Ace blade needed to be sharpened. They hold their edges really well and she was skating upwards of 6 hours a week.

By the way @WM Phantoms are nice blades. My son has MK Gold Star and the toes picks are HUUUUGE!

Phantoms are absolutely fabulous blades but I just switched mine for MK Gold Star, because the pics on the GS are smaller...  ;D  I'm primarily a dancer, but back when I did both dance and freestyle (in the 90s), I used Phantoms.  When I specialised completely in dance, I switched to MK Dance.  Now, I like the Dance for the speed and slickness but coming back after 18 years and discovering Field Moves, I realised that Dance didn't work well for me with all the back three turns, etc, so I went back to Phantoms.  Then I found out the hard way that Phantoms and dance boots don't work as I'd swing my leg through with a beautifully pointed toe, catch the massive top toe pick on the Phantoms and go flying!  New boots have necessitated shorter blades and as I'm not overly keen on the long tail on the Phantoms or that top pick, I chose Gold Star.  Only skated on them once so far but I think they are going to be my favourites ever...

H

He absolutely loves his GS blades.
I made a mistake and got him a set after his second hand Aces wore down. These were second hand and actually came from a GB international skater which also inspired my son.
Then his feet grew after 6 months and he now has new 11" blades (they were pricy and massive) but worth every penny to him (and me). He liked the second hand blades but absolutely loves the new ones. They really centred his spins and the edges he can get are sooo deep.
Oh by the way he is only working for level 3 BIS at the moment but has a few double jumps and a consistent Axel (also on off ice skates) his coach was Peter Moreland but he has just retired  :-[
I hope that you enjoy your GS as much as my son does, they have become a part of his feet.

Thanks, Crackers! I hope so, too.  8)

And now, in a return to normal programming...

Pinkpinkbagpuss!  Buy the new Coronation Ace blades!  Or I can almost guarantee you'll want to give up skating.  Rotation are nasty!

Thanks everyone! I have indeed bought coronation ace blades! I tried my boots today with the edea blades but my spins were off (I love spinning so this was disappointing), plus I just didn’t feel secure in my toe jumps. So straight to the shop I went and had some aces mounted. Love the boots though!

Glad you tried them though.  I hadn't heard anything about Edea blades before this post.  Clearly there is a community consensus on them here!!!!
