Very sad for all concerned, but I fear the first of many rinks, as well as of course many many other businesses.

Slough's doing Dancing on Ice 2021 tryouts the other day;

When I checked the rink webpages I noticed Braehead Arena is in an intu premise, which is currently in administration.

Some rinks may have been surviving on local subsidies which might now be at risk.
The greatest trick figure skaters ever pulled, was convincing the world it was easy.

Maybe Slough can keep going on DOI money.

I suspect most rinks will close, especially once face coverings become mandatory in all indoor premises.

I doubt there will be enough public money available to subsidise them, as lots of less niche causes will be clamouring for bailouts.

Of course lots of other businesses will close too.

Maybe those in rich areas will be able to survive by doubling their prices.

I expect it will take at least a decade to get back to where we were, maybe more.

Get used to skating on wheels in car parks.

Talk about a buzz kill. There is no talk of face coverings in gyms (yet) and skating can be popular again when winter kicks in. Chin up!

I hope I am wrong.  Queens is insisting on face coverings on and off the ice.  It's only a matter of time before face coverings are mandated everywhere.  Skating in winter involves crowded rinks - not possible with antisocial distancing.

I put on my new boots and Off-Ice skates for the first time on Wednesday.  It may be great fun in the future but it is also quite terrifying to start with!  I intend to keep at it, though.  I'm currently sceptical as to whether we'll ever have ice again in Plymouth.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.
