Strained muscle advice

As I mentioned elsewhere, last Wednesday morning I woke to discover that my right calf was in great pain, with occasional cramps, and localised soreness. There was no obvious swelling or bruising. The night before I was tanking it round the rink on tired legs, and clearly I overdid it. Anyway, I am not entirely convinced it is a strain (torn muscle) as that is said to be a sudden event with significant pain at the time of the injury. In this case the injury manifested itself many hours later. That said, I'd appreciate advice from others who have had a calf injury.

It's been over a week now, and I am still limping, but the leg feels much better, and cramps are now rare. I'm stretching it gently each day. I would like to get back on the ice, but I'm concerned that I don't want to go on too soon and make the injury worse. A weakened muscle will obviously damage more easily. Does anyone with experience have suggestions as to when I can go back, and how I can know that it is recovered?
