Bandy!
« on: January 23, 2019, 02:02:16 pm »
Just spotted an article on the back of the Sport section of The Torygraph (Wednesday 23rd January 2019) about bandy, and how there is a resurgence in the sport.  "Bandy's coming home - with royal approval".  Not a particularly descriptive article, but a bit about how it's been revived in the UK (having continued to be played in the US, Russia and Scandinavia) and about the successes of the current British team.  Nothing said about where it's being played, though, or how to take part, which is a shame.
Returned to the ice in Sept 2017 after a major leg injury in 1999. Skating in Jackson Elite Pro & MK Vision Syncro. Still scary after all these years.

Interesting. Never played it, never seen it played. To be honest ice hockey teams struggle to get ice time at rinks, and we train at 11 pm on Saturday evening, so bandy will struggle. Probably safer though. Ice hockey uses a stick that can bend, and in so doing it stores a huge amount of energy that is released into the puck driving it forwards at very high speeds. Hence the reason so many players lose teeth or worse. One lad I know lost four teeth and is waiting for reconstructive surgery. Being between the goal and a player who is “winding up” is very scary. I assume the bandy stick is relatively stiff, and much shorter too, so that will make a big difference. Bigger pitch too.

You joining “the dark side”?  ;D

Hell, no.  ;D  I spent more than enough time avoiding pucks whilst attempting to practice during my youth to want to go anywhere near those missiles!

"an ice rink the size of a football field" <- that would cost a bit to run artificially; we don't even have a long track in the UK.
The greatest trick figure skaters ever pulled, was convincing the world it was easy.

I am told that a long track rink is planned for Portsmouth. Whether it turns into reality remains to be seen. I can’t find online documents, so I am doubtful.

Bandy started up again in this country as “rink bandy” at my local rink, Peterborough,  last year.
I started a thread about it at the time. http://www.skatingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=7431.0

We sent a team to the World Championship in Sweden last month & won Silver in group B

It’s a very different game to ice hockey.
Hope the littleport rink gets built, the Peterborough rink doesn’t offer speed skating & I’d quite like to give it a go, especially long track

I saw your previous thread about it, MonkeyBeaver, which is why I noticed the article in the Torygraph.  I'm all for new/revived winter sports and I hope it catches on.  Interesting to see from that newspaper clipping that it's played in Somalia.  I'd never have expected that!

Fingers crossed for that new rink, too.

Yes, I was a little surprised to see Somalia played Bandy, I’ve seen there are some hockey players in Kenya too. Tim Horton’s bought them to Canada last year & made a shot film about it

I think they’re trying to get Bandy into the Olympics now too.
