It would be great if you could make an idiot-proof resurfacing machine.  It's possible to do near-prefect resurfaces very quickly with standard equipment if they are done correctly and often enough, but it seems more common to do mediocre resurfaces by racing round, not using enough water, not using the right eater, not using water at the correct temperature, not setting the blade at the correct height, not replacing that rag thing they use often enough, and generally not giving a stuff about how the ice comes out.

You see the maintenance staff do drill depth checks to gauge the thickness of the ice - this takes a while though; they can then build up / take off. One of the guys told me that you even get troughs where the resurfacer goes up and down, so every so often they crosscut the ice to correct this, and lessen the water on the turns, otherwise the ends build up.

Like you said, it's a shame when the tools are not used correctly.
