For crossovers I find it easier to put the foot onto the outside edge by crossing then pushing my heal down tiny bit when it's on the outside edge and then lifting my foot back without dropping the toe ready for the next one :)

Forward outside 3's and backwards one foot glides.

I am not friends with these moves at the moment. Maybe tomorrow's skate will bring some progress.

Have you tried doing the movement for a mowhawk off ice so you become comfortable with the foot position?

getting used to those darn toepicks !!!!!!!

i keep catching when doing backwards crossovers, am i not using outside edge enough?

You're too far forward on the blade. You need to sit back and put less pressure on the balls of your feet.

Reminds me of this thread: http://www.skatingforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=5500.0

The tips in that thread may help you.

I've just started learning backwards crossovers, and I always drag my toepick on the ice!  Argh!

Check the position of your head if your looking at your feet your more likely to be on your toe pick. ;)
