I showed up at the rink yesterday for the regular Coach & Skate session, knowing that most of the usual attendees were away and thinking that it would be lovely and quiet for practice and I'd get a bit more out of the group lesson in a much smaller group.  The best laid plans...  Unfortunately, the usual coach was very poorly and really needed to go home so I was volunteered (ie told!) I was taking an edge class instead.  Talk about thrown in at the deep end - I haven't done that in over 20 years!  I hope they enjoyed it and got something out of it.  It was lovely to see them try the plie exercise and then absorb the information about the knee bend and rise giving a "secret push" so they progressed from managing about two before running out of steam to doing a whole line of them from end to end of the rink.

Unfortunately, I remembered why I loved teaching.  This complicates things.

Yes, I've found out I may be able to start my coaching journey sooner than anticipated. It does complicate matters somewhat  ;D

How exciting.  I need more details about this...

This week, I worked on, mastered and successfully taught a new exercise for my new group of "Edge Class Enthusiasts".  This has made me very happy.

Would love to do your Edge Enthusiasts class! Shame you are a few too many miles away.  Is it a secret or can you let us know your new exercise?  I usually spend my skating time doing edges so like to hear of new ones.
Space on the ice is starting to be filled with “school outings” who use it like a playground without any rules, so go in every direction.  :o

Oh, top secret.  I could tell you but...

Well, basically it consists of a LFO open chasse, extend the free (right) leg behind you, with beautifully pointed toe, after the chasse then swing it forward to effect a change of edge to an inside, take the free/right leg back again and put it down behind you so that you do an inside spreadeagle.  This can take you round in a full circle or just as far as you are comfortable (then turn it into more of a two-foot twizzle) until you are ready to step forward onto a RFO and start again with an open chasse.  It forms a serpentine pattern down the rink and can start off quite small and sedate until you're confident with it and then get larger and more swooping, maybe with added arm movements.  Looks particularly good done in unison and is lovely skated to music.

I look forward to that!  (You're welcome to join me for this sort of thing whenever I'm in Gosport, which is a bit closer to you.)

Oh, this weekend has been busy! 2 performances of our Christmas show yesterday, then a lesson tonight. Yesterday was fun, but no major achievements there really.

Tonight, however, was a different story.

Spirals are higher again, after getting back into my stretching routine.
Jumps are all improving, still don't like the salchow much but we're slowly making friends.
Spins. Ah, my nemesis. Tonight something CLICKED! 3 rotations on a 1 foot spin. Multiple times. Multiple times in lesson. WITH. A. COACH. WATCHING! Then a few more times outside of lesson. Been working towards that moment for a good year or so!

We've also set our big goals for 2020 - pass Gold, stretch every day, and work on my turns and edges eery session (I skip them a lot - jumping and spinning are too alluring!)

Well done VIOI, it’s nice when something comes together.

I’ve had a good week, following an awful few weeks. On Thursday’s scrimmage I got a positive reaction from someone who had in the past been a bit of a bully. I made some nice tackles, which he liked, and he gave me a pass which I turned into a goal. That was more goalie ineptitude than ability on my part, but a goal’s a goal. This morning’s scrimmage went well, I didn’t fall once and played a decent game. My coach was present and said I did well, which is nice as he’s critical.

I’ve been practicing FO three turns regularly for a couple of weeks, and who would have thought it, but they really have helped me be more stable in hockey. And they are great fun. Not sure a double salchow or triple lutz are on the cards. The one foot slalom is progressing at a snails pace, by which I mean a dead snail, nailed to the floor and encased in concrete. Slowly slowly catchee monkey. Not that I have any need of a monkey.

A nice piece of tittle tattle regarding the 50 year old male who attacked me during a hockey scrimmage, and who incidentally is married to a 20 year old woman. I heard today that he and his first wife used to be porn stars. And when I told someone today that I was attacked, that person guessed who it was immediately! Apparently he is a known bully.

Oh, once you can do a FO three turn, the next logical step is a double salchow.  You'll have that before the end of the year...

Sounds like a real charmer.  Name's not Dirk, is it...?   ;D ;D ;D
